Soda recipes have gone through major changes over the years, as new ingredients and substitutes for sugar were invented. Up until about the 1970’s, cola and other soft drinks were sweetened naturally with real sugar. However as the cost of sugar tariffs were raised during the 1970-1980’s, soda companies such as Pepsi switched to high fructose corn syrup to replace sugar in their recipes. The inexpensive sugar replacement made from a blend of corn syrups can now be found in everything from yogurt, to juice drinks, and even breakfast cereals!

Can you tell the difference between cola sweetened with real sugar versus high fructose corn syrup? If you are like my father, who actually worked in a soda bottling company during his youth and drank a lot of cola, you can certainly tell the difference. He, like many others, claims that soda today “just isn’t what it used to be; it used to be much sweeter!” In April of 2009, the global corporation released the Pepsi Throwback for a limited time of only 8 short weeks! Customers had such a positive response to the soda that Pepsi has decided to re-release it again in 2011 for an unlimited time. The new, or rather old, retro packaging is reminiscent of the logo and can design of Pepsi in the 1970’s, as you can see on the company’s logo evolution timeline below. The cola company has also initiated a contest on Facebook called Random Acts of Throwback where visitors can answer trivia questions for retro memorabilia prizes!
